CBT - Compulsory Basic Training

Anyone who wants to learn to ride a motorcycle or scooter MUST complete a CBT course to be allowed on the road legally. The CBT is the very first step you take before going onto take your motorcycle test.

The CBT is a days training and can be taken from the age of 16 years. After you have successfully completed this course you will be issued with a DL196 certificate which is valid for 2 years, as long as -

  • You display 'L' (or 'D' plates in Wales) on the front and back of your bike or moped
  • You ride to the rules of the road
  • You do not ride on the motorway
  • You do not carry a Pillion Passenger
  • You ride nothing larger that a 125cc (or 50cc if aged 16years) with a maximum power output of 11kW (14.6bhp)

The CBT is divided into 5 elements, these are-

  • Element A - The eyesight test and safety talk
  • Element B - Learning about the controls of the bike
  • Element C - Off road training (Learning how to ride the bike)
  • Element D - The highway code talk and how to ride on the road safely
  • Element E - Road ride (Minimum of 2 hours)

Please visit 'Licence Info' for more information about your licence entitlement after you have completed your CBT.

All motorcycle training can be booked through our staff at The licence centre, we act purely as a booking agent and any training will be carried out by TLC Motorcycle Training and Budget Biking, see our contact list for full information on TLC Motorcycle Training and Budget Biking.
